Fishing is the most underappreciated sport worldwide. While not as popular as soccer or basketball, there is something special that separates fishing from its competition.
Fishing isn’t a competitive sport; rather, it’s a relaxing activity that relieves stress and enables you to appreciate nature. There is no true competition, unless, of course, you’re a professional. That’s what makes this sport so special.
I love this sport because it lets me escape society. The water is crystal clear and there is nobody around to make much noise. Fishing really gives me an appreciation of my surroundings and helps me understand the importance of nature.
One reason sports are widely loved is because they offer the thrill of intense competition. But fishing is special for a different reason. While fishing may seem simple, it’s actually very complex. Many believe it’s as simple as throwing a line in the water and waiting for a fish to bite, but, in reality, it’s much more than that.
My first time spent fishing was nothing short of a waste of time. I was very frustrated that I spent an entire day on the water with so little to show for it.
In time, however, this experience helped me understand what goes into a successful fishing trip. I’ve learned to be patient and to stay calm when there were no bites.
Ultimately, the lessons I’ve learned have helped me enjoy the sport to the fullest. I’d like to share some of those lessons with you.
In order to succeed in fishing, it’s necessary to understand what you’re doing and pay attention to detail. Hours of preparation can go into a trip. You must know what the weather will be on the day you go, as it can have a major effect on the fishing and the type of bait you’ll use to lure the fish in.
In addition to the weather, you must know what spots are likely to hold the most and highest quality fish, and how to get there. Furthermore, certain parts of the world have different species in their waters. You need to have a general knowledge of what species are in your area. This will give you an easier time in actually catching a fish.
You’ll also need to get the proper gear. Without this, your chances of having success while fishing will be significantly lower.
There are many variations in gear you could use, depending on the type of fish you’re going for. If you plan to fish for sharks, for example, you’d need a heavy rod.
Your fishing line would also need to be very thick to support the pressure being applied to it. Instead of using traditional bait like worms, you might have to use a live fish to attract a shark. This is an example of how a specific setting requires a different specific set of tools to let you enjoy your time and fish successfully.
Although the attention to detail is what really makes this sport special to me. I also love that fishing allows me to bond with relatives or friends.
One good example of this occurred many years ago when I went fishing with my grandfather in Bal Harbor, New Jersey. My grandfather had gone fishing many times prior to this. He wasn’t a newcomer such as myself and was able to educate me on the subject.
We woke up at around 5:30 in the morning for our trip. We were both very tired but excited for the day that lay ahead. We drove to the boat, got on, and went to work.
It was a very interesting experience because it was my first time fishing in the ocean. We had large fishing rods, which were much bigger than the ones I was accustomed to using. We used chunks of dead fish for bait and let it sink to the bottom to attract our target: bluefish.
After waiting for around an hour, we got a bite, and the rest was history. As a young kid, I was amazed at the leaping ability of this creature, and was ecstatic that we had gotten a bite. We reeled in the fish and were very proud that all our hard work finally paid off and resulted in such a great memory.
Fishing continues to be underappreciated in our country. Many people aren’t attracted to this great sport, but, in my opinion, it’s one of the best. Although the lack of competition may be dissatisfying to some, the details of the sport are intriguing, and the memories can last a lifetime.
