TABC has many sports teams and they are all popular with our students. One of the great things about our school is the number of games we play against other schools in so many sports. I interviewed a number of students to find out which sports are popular in the student body.
Basketball is my favorite sport to watch. I think it’s TABC’s best team and their games are extremely thrilling to attend. The games are intense. Basketball is the fastest game; both teams score very frequently, as opposed to baseball or hockey, where scoring is very rare.
Seeing the players go up and down the court draws me into the action. I really loved watching TABC’s home game against MTA, which packed the gym with a raucous crowd. Seeing my good friend, Ezra Baron, knock down a three-pointer at the end of the third quarter was electrifying. The overall atmosphere of that game really hyped up me and my friends.
Although basketball is not my favorite sport to play, I am more entertained going to basketball games than any other sporting event. But my opinion is only my own. Let’s see what other students have to say about their favorite sports.
Junior Elisha Spierer told me that his favorite sport was also varsity basketball. When I asked him why,
Spierer said, “I enjoy playing it and watching it because when I was a kid, my dad and I always watched basketball together, so I like it the most. Also, I love playing basketball myself, so it’s always awesome getting to see the TABC team play with their high skill level, with regards to both shooting and ball-handling.”
Matti Cohen named baseball is his favorite TABC sport: “I just love the sport and it is really fun and cool to see my friends and classmates play the sport that I love.”
When pressed to name other examples of why he likes baseball the best, Cohen said, “I am a diehard Mets fan, so seeing my school participate in this sport just makes it much more entertaining to watch. Also, since it is my favorite sport, I am trying out for the team.”
I personally don't agree with Cohen because I find baseball to be slower and less fun to watch than some other sports. But that’s just my opinion.
Junior Jakob Berger also expressed his preference for Varsity basketball: “I am a former basketball player myself so watching the team play reminds me of when I used to play and love the sport. A lot of my friends are on the team so I enjoy going to the games and seeing them play.”
Berger noted that he gets “nostalgic” when watching our school play “because I used to be the star of my school’s basketball team. I tried out for the team in each of the last three years and I have not made it; hopefully, next year is my year.”
I see what Berger is saying and I agree with him. I wish him luck to make the team next year.
Freshman David Attar said his favorite sport was soccer: “I am Brazilian and in my old country, soccer is the national sport. When I used to live in Brazil, my brother Benny and I would play all day. Also, I am on the TABC soccer team.”
I asked Attar if he was on the soccer team in middle school and replied yes: “When I went to Ben Porat Yosef, I was the best player on their soccer team.”
I find David’s story of how he got into the sport when he lived in Brazil to be fascinating. Nevertheless, I disagree with his opinion that soccer is the best sport to watch. I find it too hard for me to follow or understand.
Baseball and soccer certainly have their fans at our school. However, I still believe that basketball has the perfect mix of being both entertaining and electrifying. It will always be my favorite sport at TABC.
